Under-tile heating mats & cable
The most common job we do – a thin heating mat or loose cable laid directly under the tiles, then connected and certified. The right fit for bathrooms, ensuites, kitchens and tiled entryways, and it barely lifts the floor height. The element goes down once the substrate is ready and before the tiler grouts, so the timing has to be right. Common across villas and bungalows in Ponsonby, Grey Lynn and Mt Eden.
In-screed underfloor heating
For larger areas – open-plan living, a whole bathroom floor, or a new room – heating cable set into a screed layer spreads warmth evenly and holds it longer than a thin mat. It suits jobs where the floor build-up is being done from scratch, so it is usually planned into a renovation or new build. We size the cable to the area and the floor finish going over it.
Bathroom & ensuite floor heating
A cold tiled bathroom in an Auckland winter is miserable, and a damp one is worse. Underfloor heating warms the tiles and helps the floor dry faster after a shower, keeping moisture down in a room prone to it. It is the single most-requested underfloor job we get, and it pairs naturally with a bathroom refresh – set it on a timer so the floor is warm before the morning shower.
Thermostat install & upgrade
The thermostat is what keeps running costs sensible – a good programmable or WiFi controller heats the floor only when you will use it. We install new thermostats with the heating, retrofit a smart controller to an existing system, and replace failed or dated units. If your floor heats but you cannot control it properly, the thermostat is usually the culprit, not the cable.
Fault-finding & repair
A system that has stopped working, has cold patches, or keeps tripping the circuit needs proper diagnosis – not guesswork that means lifting tiles you do not have to. A registered electrician tests the element with insulation-resistance testing to locate the fault, checks the thermostat and the circuit, and tells you straight whether it is a quick fix or a bigger job. Plenty of dead systems just need a new thermostat.
Heating into a renovation
Underfloor heating has to go in at the right stage – after the substrate, before the tiles. Get the sequence wrong and it is an expensive redo. We work alongside your builder and tiler to lay the element at the correct point, set the thermostat location, and connect and certify once the floor is finished, so the heating never holds up the rest of the job.

Do I need a registered electrician to install underfloor heating in NZ?
Yes. Electric underfloor heating connects to your home electrical wiring, which makes installing it prescribed electrical work under the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010. It must be carried out by an electrician registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) who holds a current practising licence. DIY electrical work of this kind is illegal and can void your home insurance. Every electrician we use is EWRB-registered.
How much does electric underfloor heating cost in Auckland?
Most jobs run from a few hundred dollars for a thermostat upgrade through to roughly $1,500 to $3,000 or more for a supplied-and-installed bathroom or ensuite floor. The cost depends on the heated area, the type of thermostat, and whether tiling is part of the scope. Can you retrofit underfloor heating into an existing bathroom?
Yes, but the heating element sits under the tiles – so the existing floor finish has to come up and be re-laid. That means a straight retrofit into a finished bathroom usually only makes sense if you are already replacing the floor or renovating. If you are planning a bathroom refresh, that is the ideal time to add it. We tell you honestly whether it is worth doing as a standalone job.
Is electric underfloor heating expensive to run?
It is best used as comfort heating for specific zones like a bathroom, not as whole-home heating, because electric resistance heating costs more to run per unit of warmth than a heat pump. Does underfloor heating count toward Healthy Homes compliance?
No. The Healthy Homes heating standard requires a fixed heater of a set capacity in the main living room – underfloor heating in a bathroom or ensuite does not satisfy it. Treat underfloor heating as a comfort upgrade, not a compliance fix. If you need the living-room heating requirement sorted as well, we can quote both together.
What floors can electric underfloor heating go under?
Tile and stone are the ideal surfaces – they conduct and hold heat well, which is why bathrooms and kitchens are the most common jobs. Some systems are rated to go under engineered timber, laminate or vinyl, but the product has to be matched to the floor finish and its temperature limit. We confirm compatibility before quoting so the heating and the floor work together.
How long does it take to install underfloor heating?
