Typical cost: supplied and installed in Auckland, ceiling insulation runs roughly $11-40/m², underfloor $12-25/m², a ground moisture barrier $7-15/m², and wall insulation $13-30/m². As a guide, ceiling and underfloor together for a 100m² home is about $3,000-5,000, and adding wall insulation during a renovation is about $8,000-15,000 or more. Eligible households may pay as little as $500-1,000 for ceiling and underfloor through the government-funded Warmer Kiwi Homes programme.

What affects the cost

- Product and R-value: for rental compliance the Healthy Homes standards require ceiling insulation of at least R2.9 for a new install (or R1.3 for existing insulation topped up), underfloor of at least R1.3, and a ground moisture barrier where the subfloor is accessible – see the standards at tenancy.govt.nz and healthyhomes.govt.nz
- Wall insulation is usually only practical during a renovation when the linings are off, and can require building consent – check your project with Auckland Council
